A blank piece of paper (A4 or letter size is fine)
A cup of cold tea or brown watercolour paint
A paintbrush or sponge
A pencil or pen
(Optional) a candle or lighter, with adult help ONLY
(Optional) string, ribbon, or sealing wax
Age the Paper
Crumple the paper into a tight ball. Then carefully uncrumple it — this gives it old creases like a real map. Dab cold tea or watery brown paint over the paper using a sponge or brush. Cover the whole surface. Let it dry completely. (It’s okay if it curls up — that adds to the effect!)
(Optional) Burn the Edges — With Help!
ONLY with an adult’s help: carefully singe the edges using a lighter or candle flame for an ancient, scorched look. Blow out any smouldering edges straight away!
Write Your Message
Add a message to Merlin, a spell, or a riddle. You could even write it in a rune code! Or turn it into a map of a secret place in the Ember Realms (real or imagined).
Roll & Seal the Scroll
Roll your paper into a scroll. Use ribbon or string to tie it closed. Or create your own “wax seal” using red paper, stickers, or coloured glue.
When you're done, hide your scroll somewhere safe. One day, it might unlock a part of the Ember Vault… Before you roll your scroll, place a red wax seal at the bottom to bind it with flame and purpose. Look closely... some say ancient marks appear to those who truly see.
